Removing the AVG (Virus Product) tab from your Chrome Browser

I recently installed a new version of the AVG Virus Scan product (purchased version) and experienced the AVG tab for each new Chrome browser tab I opened.  It was an interesting experiment to find exactly how to remove this helpful AVG tab from my Chrome browser.  I thought I'd share how to eliminate this tab.  In short Chrome does have plug-ins in addition to extensions and here is how you disable a plug-in.

There were plenty of helpful posts on how to modify your computer by hacking through Windows RegEdit but, I find that level of manipulation too potentially destructive.  Fortunately CNET had a good post from 2012 on how to avoid the auto play of sound and video when you visit a web site and a modification of those instructions will allow you to regain control of your Chrome experience. Here's how to disable plug-ins in Google Chrome:

Step 1: Open the general menu in the top right-hand corner of your Chrome browser, then go to Settings.

Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Show advanced settings.

Step 3: In the new area that loads, find the Privacy subsection and click on the "Content settings" button.(Note  from MMY: you may not have known that this button takes you to a new screen that lets you control plug-ins)

Step 4: Scroll down to Plug-ins in the small pop-up window and select the "Disable Individual Plugins". Find the AVG plug-in and click Disable.  You should also disable the appropriate Web Browser features in your AVG management console.  Close and restart your Chrome browser, open a new tab to confirm that you have regained control over your Chrome Browser tabs.
